There?s a road in the Marcola area (Eugene-Springfield area, Oregon) that?s known to be haunted. At one end of this road is a cemetery. At the other end is a closed off area; the rumor is that University archeologist students had had enough of the negative haunting type energy and so left it as is. It?s unclear if the property belongs to the University, the city, county, or what. Story goes, the land remains as is, with no one building on it.
The area itself: the road, the closed off section, the home I?ll talk about in a bit, and the cemetery, is on ?old Native American camping/hunting grounds.? It?s a clich?, this idea of hauntings happening on ?old Indian burial/hunting/camping grounds? but in this case, it?s the truth.
The road is creepy. I?ve been on it many times. It looks ?normal? -- lots of well maintained, upper middle class homes on large pieces of property. Semi-rural, or, semi-urban -- whichever happens first. It doesn't look creepy, but it very definitely feels creepy.
The House With the Lions
One house at the end of the road is decidedly out of place, with its large stone lions at the end of the driveway. Standing in front of it with friends who live on this road, I mentioned how uncomfortable the place made me, and had the strong urge to leave. At the time the house was uninhabited, and I was told by my friends that it had been empty for over a year. I later found out that this home had all kinds of strange things associated with it, including reports of monster type ?ghosts? or entities appearing on the property; stories of black dog like creatures with red glowing eyes, for example. This house by the way is next to the abandoned archeological area.
The Cemetery
I knew the cemetery was haunted; had heard several stories of very strange things experienced by others while at or near the cemetery. There?s the old man seen walking along, who disappears suddenly. The sound of a rocking chair rocking right next to you, a barking, snarling dog that isn?t there, etc. I?ve been to that cemetery twice, and that was enough. The first time I visited I wasn?t expecting anything, because it?s a very small cemetery. It was in the daytime; and I wasn?t expecting to find anything strange, since the cemetery was so small. Which doesn?t make any sense, but I guess in my mind I had an idea of a dark, overgrown, neglected and large cemetery; a perfect place for hauntings. Too many movies I guess. It was a sunny day, and nothing seemed unusual. Until I moved over to one small section of the cemetery, and felt an immediate negative feeling that was literally, physically chilling. I had that urge again to move away, and in fact, wanted nothing more than to get away from the place.
A couple of months later, I went back, at night. I was on my way to visit my friends, who lived in a house on the road, and decided, for some crazy and irresponsible reason, to visit the cemetery first. Alone. At night. Yes, stupid is the word. I drove through the little cemetery, and the suffocating feeling of terror was something like I had never experienced before. It was unbelievable! I was almost crying in hysterics, the highly charged negative energy was so intense. There was a very old and nasty presence there to be sure! I couldn't drive out of there fast enough. I had never felt anything like that in my life.
My Friend?s House
I've written elsewhere about "Lola," my friend who lives in the coastal range with her husband and children. Her family lives on this road, and Lola lived in this house for a few years. The whole family has all kinds of stories to tell about odd things happening in the house. Some are negative, but overall, the events are playful and positive. I wonder if much of it is more of a poltergeist thing than just ghosts, although there does seem to be that as well. There are many children of all ages in that home.
My first visit there was something out of Ghost Hunter?s Manual, Chapter 1. The fresh batteries (from the package) I had just put into the camera and tape recorder didn?t seem to work; for both the camera and tape recorder persisted in ?dying? every time I turned them on. A new set of batteries didn?t help. Same thing; camera wouldn't work, tape recorder kept shutting off.
I was taken on a tour of the large home, but not told anything specifically. When I entered one of the bedrooms I felt the energy; good, warm energy, a positive, playful presence, and said so. The owner confirmed that this was one of the places the ghost liked to appear.
Walking up the narrow stairs to the converted attic bedroom, I exclaimed, out loud, ?Ow!? in surprise. I felt a huge electrical shock go right through me; a hot spot. It didn't hurt, but I was taken by surprise, and had never felt anything like that before. Again, the owner confirmed that the stairway was one place where the ghost liked to be.
Up in the attic room, talking with family members, I became aware of a large white mist that began to form above, and behind, where everyone was sitting. I was watching this ?mist? though it was much more solid than mist, and seemed to be taking on more solidity as time went on. I didn?t say anything, but couldn?t keep my eyes off it; I was also beginning to feel a bit strange. Not in a bad way, but as if I were leaving my body, the voices and sight of the family becoming distant, while I becoming more and more aware of the spirit energy coming though. Much later, I mentioned that to Lola and her mother, who confirmed that this was one of the ghosts favorite places to be, and that is pent a lot of time there.
Halloween
A local television news crew came out to do a segment on the house for Halloween. The lights were set up perfectly, we were just about ready to start tape, when all the lights fell over in a perfect domino effect. It?s difficult to explain but it seemed like someone had given them a deliberate push; even though we didn?t see anyone push them over, the way they fell was very odd. A little later, the home owner started calling to the ghost they call ?Casper? who seemed to be the ghost of a child. Casper liked to be downstairs the most, and everyone agreed it was probably Casper who pushed the lights. When Casper was called, one of the desk drawers near the lights popped open, as if the drawer was shoved out from the inside of the desk. Lola?s mother pushed the drawer back in, and, after a couple of seconds, it shot out again. This went on for a while, then abruptly stopped.
Casper
One of the stories shared by Lola?s mother and sister was the time Casper (they assumed) set full to the very top tumblers of juice out on the floor. Or the time the dishes were set out on the table. The usual ghost stuff about electronics going on and off without anyone around. Constant toilet flushing is another favorite activity for Casper.
One night, while there, I heard a distinct sound of a child?s laughter coming from ?out there.? Again, it is very difficult to explain these things. The sound just didn?t sound like it came from this plane, or this reality. One other person said she heard it, the others didn?t. (I've heard this same kind of sound quality during astral projections or OOBEs and meditations.)
UFOS
None of the family members in that area have had any UFO or related experiences that I know of, but I have found out that that area is also known for some very strange UFO sightings and sighting of orbs of light, including orange orbs. What that means I don?t know, it isn?t something I?ve investigated at any length.
