ORLANDO, FL (NBC) -- For the first time in its history, the diocese of Orlando, Florida is investigating what they believe is a true miracle.
A Central Florida woman suffering from cancer said she prayed to God through Blessed Karl of Austria. Eventually, her doctors told her the cancer was gone.
The diocese said this is the second miracle by the Blessed Karl, and now he may become a saint.
"It's a very lengthy, extensive process," said Rev. Fernando Gil, of the Diocese of Orlando. "We've been working 16 months collecting all the evidence."
When the woman was diagnosed with cancer, she and her Catholic friends prayed to God through the Blessed Karl of Austria.
Karl was the last emperor of Austria, and King of Hungary. He died in 1922.
A year after the woman and her friends began to pray, her health started to improve.
"[That] miracle is attributed to Karl," Gil said.
Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, a representative from the Vatican, was at the diocese Thursday morning to review exactly what happened.
He will return to the Vatican to review whether Karl will become a saint.
Ambrosi has handled more than 300 cases of professed miracles and believes the Pope will recognize Karl of Austria as a saint.
Numerous studies have been done regarding the power of prayer in the healing process.
Although it has not been proven that prayer can change the outcome of an illness, those who do pray generally tolerate treatment better.
